Moving Day,
So moving day came along with 2-3 inches of snow!! We went to pick up the U-haul which was supposed to be there at noon. We got there and they said that the truck wasn't there and that they didn't know where it was. It was a storage place that we were picking it up at so they only get trucks that have been ordered and that U-haul drops off to them so they called U-haul to see where are truck was and they said that their records said that it had already been dropped off so they scrambled to find another truck and finally they found one but we would have to wait 2 hours for it to be dropped off. We told them that was not okay so they found another one that was in Kuna but we would have to go get it. We said we would go get it so Russell and my dad went to get it. 45 min. to an hour later they showed up with the truck and we were ready to load. We got it all loaded which took about 3 hours and tried to make sure we got everything out. By the time we got gas and got on the road it was almost 5 o'clock. Luckily the roads were good so we were on our way. Russell and Kennadee were in the truck and I was following behind in the Toyota. About half way through the trip Russell started to swerve a little and black smoke came out from under the passenger side rear tire. I called him on the cell phone to see what was going on. He said that the brakes just got soft and he was having a hard time slowing down. I told him to pull over so we could figure out what was going on so he did and he had a really hard time getting the truck to stop and get off the road (we're talking a 24 ft. long truck) I got out of the car and went up and got in the cab with him (it was 20 degrees outside!!) We called the U-haul help number and they said they would get a mechanic out to us as within an hour. So an hour went by and no one came so we called U-haul back and they put us on hold and while we were holding the mechanic called and said he was on his way that U-haul had just called to tell him to head out. They had called him an hour before but told him to wait until they called him back before he left. So he said he was coming from Boise and would be another hour before he got there. So that hour went by and still no word from him so we called U-haul again and they told us that they had decided to send a tow truck instead of the mechanic and that he should be there in an hour. Soon a police officer came by and helped us get further off the road and put up some flares so that the tow truck driver could see us and I asked him exactly where we were so I could call the tow truck driver to tell him where we were. When I called the driver to tell him. I asked him how close he was and he said he was just leaving Boise because he had spent the last hour trying to find a tow truck big enough to tow us so he would be another hour before he got there.!!!! I was outraged!!! I couldn't believe how ridiculous this was. So finally he got there and hooked the truck up and we had him follow us to Twin Falls. We arrived in Twin Falls at about midnight. So a trip that should have taken and hour and a half to two hours ended up taking 6 hours!! We had to leave the truck at the U-haul store in Twin and wait until the next day to get it fixed so we could unload it. The next morning we went to the U-haul place to see what was going on the manager got under the truck and found that the brake line in the rear passenger tire was broken!!! My husband and child could have been killed!! so we called U-haul corp. to get our money back. Had to wait 3 days to be able to talk to the right person and then he told Russell that it would be a lot of work to get our money back but he could give us 20% back and a $40 gift card to U-haul. So that was two weeks ago and we just got the check but there was no gift card in with it. So Monday I get to call and see what it going on with that!! Also when I was asking them what kind of inspections they do on the vehicles before they send them out and they told me that they check what they can see on the outside but they rely on their CUSTOMERS to let them know if there is a problem with the truck!!!! So needless to say we are never going to use U-haul again!!!

Wow!!! What an adventure...or nightmare. I'm happy that you guys made it okay to Twin Falls. That's REALLY messed up that they don't do regular checks on the whole truck. I will make sure to stear clear of Uhaul. I'm sorry I haven't been as good as I should keeping up with you.
my oh my gosh Maria, that is sooo scary! I cannot even believe that. I would call the better Buisness bureau and make a complaint. They are risking peoples lives by not checking the trucks.
I am making a mental note not to go with them when we move.
Thanks for the heads up Maria. I am so grateful that angels were watching out for you and Russell and Kennadee! I would be heart broken if something bad happened to any of you!
When you told me this originally I was appalled and very grateful that Russell and Kennadee were protected.
I think that I would definitely pursue getting a much larger refund with all of that hassle and danger!!! I think Rachael's idea of contacting the BBB or other organization that protects consumers is great.
I wish I woud have known that you guys were going to get a U-haul! We had a very similar experience when we moved from PG to Springville (broken down truck and everything, only ours dropped the whole transmission in the middle of the road!) I would have told you to go with someone else! I am so glad that you are all safe! I don't care how long it takes, I would definitely persue a FULL refund from them AND report them to the BBB. We had already decided never to use U-haul again, this just puts the nail in the coffin! So glad you guys made it okay!
